WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected former President Donald Trump's last-ditch plea to block the release of his tax records to House Democrats, paving the way for their possible disclosure to the lawmakers. The decision by the court in a brief order noting no dissenting votes means the committee can try to access the documents before Republicans take over the House in January. At least five people have been killed and 18 injured after a gunman opened fire inside a gay club in the US state of Colorado on Saturday night. A suspect is in police custody and is being treated for injuries. Two "heroic" people in the club subdued the attacker, police say. Club Q, in Colorado Springs, wrote on Facebook that it was "devastated by the senseless attack" on its community. US President Joe Biden said Americans "cannot and must not tolerate hate". Police asked people to be patient while they worked to identify victims and finalise the number of casualties, adding that some people had taken themselves to hospital. Officers received an initial emergency call about an active shooter at 23:57 (06:57 GMT) on Saturday, they said. The suspect was found inside the club. Two firearms were found at the scene, and the attacker is thought to have used a long rifle. Police did not suggest a motive for the shooting but said the investigation would consider whether it was a hate crime, and if more than one person was involved. A fire department spokesman said casualties had been transported to hospitals very quickly because of training for such events. The FBI in nearby Denver said it was assisting local police with the incident. Police chief Adrian Vasquez thanked the two club-goers who intervened to stop the shooter. "Initial evidence and interviews indicate that the suspect entered Club Q and immediately began shooting at people inside as he moved further into the club," he told a news conference on Sunday. "While the suspect was inside of the club, at least two heroic people inside the club confronted and fought with the suspect and were able to stop the suspect from continuing to kill and harm others. At first he thought the shots were part of the music, he told the Colorado Sun, but he later ran to take shelter in the club dressing room. "When I came out there were bodies on the floor, shattered glass, broken cups, people crying," he said. "There was nothing keeping that man from coming in to kill us. Why did this have to happen? Why? Why did people have to lose their lives?" Mr Thurman, who lives near the club, said it was an important part of the local gay community. He believes he knows one person who was killed. The midterm elections may have resulted in a divided Congress, but environmentalists still saw plenty to celebrate, with wins in several key races that could reshape climate politics in the country over the next few years. While a Republican-controlled House likely means it will be more resistant to climate policies, experts said certain election victories — particularly at the state and local level — could be significant in helping the nation reduce emissions and transition away from fossil fuels. At the federal level, the Democrats held onto control of the Senate, an outcome that means opponents won’t be able to dismantle President Biden’s sweeping Inflation Reduction Act, which includes hundreds of billions of dollars to fight climate change. The law, passed in August, includes major spending to expand renewable energy production, provide incentives for electric vehicles and clean energy, and prioritize environmental justice initiatives. Holmes was found guilty of misleading Theranos investors about the company’s technology and financial health. She faced up to 20 years in prison. Elizabeth Holmes, the founder and CEO of failed blood-testing company Theranos, has been sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in federal prison for her role in committing a years-long fraud that saw her company ascend to the heights of Silicon Valley before collapsing in disgrace. Holmes was convicted in January of four counts of lying to Theranos investors about the company’s technology and its financial health. She faced a potential maximum of 20 years in prison. “I regret my failings with every cell of my body," Holmes told the court prior to her sentencing. She then quoted a poem: “Yesterday I tried to change the world. Today I’m wise, and want to change myself.” In his sentencing statement, Judge Edward Davila said the case was "troubling on so many levels." "What went wrong? This is sad because Ms. Holmes is brilliant.” The judge ordered Holmes to surrender to authorities on April 27, 2023. The sentence closes one chapter of the Theranos saga, in which the failed blood-testing company came to be valued at as much as $9 billion before it collapsed in scandal and fraud. Founded in 2003 by Holmes, then a student at Stanford University, Theranos managed to grow rapidly, thanks in part to unchecked hype and the charisma of its creator. Holmes successfully pitched investors and influential members of society, including two former senators and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who became board members, that Theranos' technology could use a drop of blood to instantly test for a host of medical conditions. But the technology was faulty. Whenever someone would ask how Theranos could do what it purported to do, Holmes and others would respond that discussing the inner workings of their machines would reveal trade secrets. That led to real world cases of false positives for customers: Arizona resident Erin Tompkins said during the trial that she got a false-positive result at a Walgreens for an HIV antigen, which caused her significant emotional distress. Another Theranos user said her medication was changed as a result of faulty test results, which led to a heart attack. A 2015 audit of Theranos by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services found “the deficient practices of the laboratory pose immediate jeopardy to patient health and safety.” “She chose fraud over business failure. She chose to be dishonest,” lead federal prosecutor Jeff Schenk said in his closing argument. “That choice was not only callous; it was criminal.” Holmes pleaded not guilty. Her defense centered on allegations against Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, the former Theranos president and chief operating officer with whom she had a romantic relationship. Janeway, who on Friday filed a lawsuit against the facility’s parent company alleging negligence, said she had voluntarily checked Anthony into the location for private residential therapeutic treatment for a litany of issues: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and because the boy was harming himself and his younger siblings, and running away. She said she struggled to keep Anthony — who is developmentally delayed and had been in special needs care since he was 5 — at home and was constantly anxious about his and his siblings’ safety. Brooklawn, which is owned and operated by the nonprofit organization Uspiritus and treats children with mental and behavioral needs, was the first residential home Anthony lived in. “I needed help and when you take a parent like me that is desperate to get their child help, we put trust into places like Brooklawn.” That trust was quickly tested, she said. 'She choked me' On Oct. 3, 2021, Janeway said, her son told her during an early morning phone call that he was being “choked” by employees at the facility, according to the lawsuit, which names Uspiritus and Seven Counties Services, another company in the same management group. She said she, her fiance and her other three children immediately drove an hour west from her home in Georgetown to Brooklawn. She tried to get into Anthony’s cottage but was taken by the facility director to another building where her son was brought to her, she said. After hugging her son, she saw “bright red circular marks and bruising” around his neck, according to the lawsuit. She removed his shirt and found “other darker colored contusions” on his chest and clavicle, the lawsuit says. “I absolutely lost it. I hit the floor. Even without the Governor’s Mansion, Republicans wielded considerable power while controlling the Legislature. But last week, voters shut them out of power in all three branches of government. “Over the course of this cycle, the Michigan Republican Party operated within the political reality that President Trump was popular amongst our grassroots and a motivating factor for his supporters, but provided challenges on a statewide ballot, especially with independents and women in a midterm election,” Cordes wrote, referring to Tudor Dixon, a former conservative commentator who lost to Whitmer by double digits, and right-wing candidates for attorney general and secretary of state. “As a Party, we found ourselves consistently navigating the power struggle between Trump and anti-Trump factions of the Party, mostly within the donor class,” Cordes added. “That power struggle ended with too many people on the sidelines and hurt Republicans in key races.” Another veteran of GOP campaigns in Michigan worried that state party officials, including Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock, weren’t taking the losses seriously enough. “Since Trump was elected, we lost the state Supreme Court, lost the entire executive branch and the entire legislative branch,” said the source, who requested anonymity to speak candidly about internal political dynamics. “Meshawn Maddock was on Twitter last night bragging about winning school board elections. Like, dude, none of that matters.” Maddock, a Trump ally who didn’t respond to requests for comment, was a common denominator in assessments of the GOP fallout in Michigan. “It felt like the Republican Party here, with Meshawn Maddock taking over as the party co-chair, went full Trump and full culture war, and they started losing in places like where I represent,” said state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, a Democrat who flipped a Republican seat in 2018. In Pennsylvania, GOP leaders had hoped to at least hold on to the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Pat Toomey. Trump threw himself into the primaries, endorsing far-right state Sen. Doug Mastriano for governor and Mehmet Oz, a celebrity doctor, for Senate. He rallied for both three days before the general election in Westmoreland County, a crucial red bastion outside Pittsburgh. But Mastriano was crushed in a landslide by Democrat Josh Shapiro, the state’s attorney general, while Oz lost a closer race against Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman. Both underperformed Trump’s 2020 numbers in Westmoreland County. “With regards to the governor’s office, there’s no way in a red year a candidate should lose by double digits,” said David La Torre, a GOP consultant in Pennsylvania. “And that really speaks to how poor our candidates were and how much Trump interfered in our primary process.” Morgan Boyd, a Republican member of the Lawrence County Commission in western Pennsylvania, called the election the “beginning of the end of the age of Trump.” “You’re seeing Trump’s influence on the Republican Party weaken,” said Boyd, who backed Shapiro in the governor’s race and Oz in the Senate race. “It’s time for him to pass the torch to more mainstream, traditional Republican candidates.” The worries about Trump extend beyond Pennsylvania and the industrial Midwest, into other battlegrounds, including Nevada, one of the first states on the 2024 primary calendar. Trump lost the state by narrow margins in 2016 and 2020. And although Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto was re-elected last week, Republican Joe Lombardo unseated Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak — in one of the few bright spots for the GOP. Amy Tarkanian, a former Nevada GOP chair, backed Trump in 2016 and 2020. Nonetheless, she called on the former president to clear the path for a new wave of leaders. “People are ready for a statesman, someone who has the policies that he implemented but with a much different tone and demeanor,” said Tarkanian, who warned that a Trump 2024 announcement this week would distract from next month’s Senate runoff in Georgia, where Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock and GOP rival Herschel Warnock must face off again after both finished below the required 50% threshold in last week’s general election. “If it’s not all hands on deck for Herschel Walker and the conversation changes to Donald Trump,” Tarkanian said, we’re screwed.

WASHINGTON — How did Democrats stop a red wave in 2022? The short answer: Donald Trump appears to have helped them. In a major departure from past trends, the 2022 midterm election turned out to be nearly as much of a referendum on the defeated former president as it was on incumbent President Joe Biden, according to exit polls conducted by Edison Research for NBC News and other networks. Trump loomed large in the minds of voters and dragged down his party’s candidates — nationally and in key swing states with Senate races — despite being out of power. In many cases that blunted the impact of Biden’s unpopularity, and widespread economic pain, helping Democrats defy political gravity and hold their own. Nationally, 32% of voters in 2022 said their vote was “to oppose Joe Biden.” But 28% said their vote was “to oppose Donald Trump,” even though Trump was out of office. That suggests Trump’s continued dominance over the GOP made the 2022 election, in the minds of voters, almost as much about a defeated former president as it was about the current president and party in power. “It was a Trump problem,” a Republican operative involved in the 2022 election told NBC News, speaking candidly about the de facto leader of the GOP on condition of anonymity to avoid retribution. “Independents didn’t vote for candidates they viewed as extreme and too closely linked with Donald J. Trump.” Independent voters made up 31% of the electorate and they favored Democrats over Republicans by a margin of 49% to 47%, a stark break from the past four midterms in which they voted by double digits for the party out of power, according to exit polls.
